Today the government announced, through the prime minister, the increase in social solidarity grant and what amounts families will receive and which groups of people are entitled to the benefit.

It will be emergency aid paid in December to 2.3 million vulnerable and low-income citizens.

Announced measures and the social solidarity subsidy

Permanent pension increases from January 1, 2023, based on a formula that takes into account gross domestic product (GDP) growth and inflation.

The increases will be of three types: one for all pensioners, one for those with more than 30 years of contributions and one for those with a large personal difference between the current pension and the one calculated by the new system.

The abolition of the extraordinary solidarity contribution for pensioners with income above 12 thousand euros per year.

Which will result in an additional benefit that can reach 600 euros per year for some.

The granting of a social dividend for workers, the value and criteria of which will be announced by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the FIT.

The increase in the family allowance for children, which will go from 40 to 50 euros per month for the first and second child. And from 100 euros per month to 120 euros per month for the third and fourth child.

Furthermore, the subsidy will be extended to families with an income of up to 40 thousand euros per year, instead of 24 thousand euros as before.

Minister Hatzidakis stated that the measures aim to strengthen the welfare state, support economic growth and distribute the benefits of the recovery to the most vulnerable groups in society. 

He also highlighted that the measures are possible thanks to the responsible management of public finances and the exceeding of growth expectations for 2022.

Additional payments

Subsidy of 100-200 euros for retirees with a personal difference.

Double the value of the market pass and extend it to November and December for citizens in areas affected by recent disasters.

Heating subsidy for all energy sources which from 1-1-2024 is also extended to electricity bills.

The Youth Pass for young people aged 18 to 19.

The increase in the minimum guaranteed income of 8%.

As the Ministry of National Economy points out, the total cost of measures to support citizens' income for December amounts to 717 million euros.

While expenditure on permanent measures to support citizens' income from 2024 amounts to 1.6 billion euros per year.
